Overview

Arambol, called Harmal by locals, lies in Pernem taluka at the far north of North Goa district, roughly 50 km from Panaji and about 25 km from Manohar International Airport at Mopa. It remains a fishing village, with about 5,300 residents at the 2011 census, far fewer than Calangute, and beach tourism there runs from November to March. Two to three days gives time to see both the beach and the lagoon beyond it, and the distance from Panaji makes a day return a long one.

Vehicles cannot drive onto the beach itself. Narrow paths lead down a slope to the shore, so the last stretch is on foot. Black rocks stand on the pale sand and make the sunsets distinctive, and a natural pool of soft yellow clay near the hill is believed locally to have healing properties. Tai chi, yoga and meditation centres, along with henna and tattoo studios, cluster around the lanes behind the beach. In the main season, strong winds make the area suited to paragliding and kite surfing.

A walk beyond the main beach leads to the next one, Kalacha, where the Sweet Water Lagoon sits; it can only be reached on foot. The fresh water there suits a rinse after the sea, and the two beaches fit into one outing.

The village also gives its name to the Harmal chilli, a small, smooth red variety about 2.7 to 3.7 cm long that has been grown in Goa for more than 200 years, grown in the laterite soil of Arambol and neighbouring parts of Pernem. A growers' association based in Pernem sought protection for it, and it received Geographical Indication status in September 2021, the second chilli from Goa to do so; it features in dishes such as vindaloo and xacuti.

Planning is mostly a question of distance. Mopa is the closer airport, and Dabolim lies much farther south. Pernem, on the Konkan Railway, is the nearest station, about 14 km away, and the road runs via Mapusa. Anjuna and Vagator lie some way to the south, each with its own page.
