Aranmula
A Pamba riverside village of mirrors, murals and palliyodam boats
An Aranmula tour in Pathanamthitta district covers the Parthasarathy Temple, the metal Aranmula kannadi mirror, the Pamba river and the Uthrattathi boat race.
Overview
Aranmula is a village on the southern bank of the Pamba river in Pathanamthitta district, and three things shape a visit: a Vishnu temple, a mirror made of metal and a river festival with sacred boats. The village is calmest from October to March, while the boat race falls in late August or September.
The Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple honours Krishna as Arjuna's charioteer and is counted among the 108 Divya Desams, the shrines praised by the Alvar poet-saints. Local tradition links the name Aranmula to a raft of six bamboo pieces that carried the idol here. The complex has gabled roofs, carved wooden panels and murals from the early 18th century, and it also keeps the Thanka Anki, the golden vestment later carried to Sabarimala.
The Aranmula kannadi is the village's other claim to fame. It is a handmade mirror of metal, a front-surface type that avoids the double reflection of ordinary glass, and it is made only in Aranmula. Metallurgists believe the alloy to be copper and tin, though the exact formula is a family secret, and the surface is polished for days with a paste of rice bran. It received a Geographical Indication tag in 2004-05. Craft traditions continue at the government-run Vasthuvidya Gurukulam, which teaches traditional architecture and offers short courses in carpentry and mural painting.
Then comes the water. During the Malayalam month of Chingam, around Uthrattathi star, palliyodams, the temple's sacred boats, glide along the Pamba, each tied to a different part of Aranmula. In 2026 there were 51 boats, split into two grades, and rowers sing traditional Vanchippattu songs. The event is more a cultural and spiritual occasion than a standard sport, and the Thiruvonathoni leads the procession. The temple also offers the Valla Sadya, a feast of many vegetarian dishes, through the Onam season.
Chengannur is the nearest railway station, about 11 km away. Thiruvananthapuram's airport is roughly 117 km distant, and Cochin is the other major airport option. Because the village is small, allow a day for the temple, a mirror workshop and the river, and add a night if the boat race is your goal. The festival dates move with the Malayalam calendar, so confirm timings locally.
