Belur and Halebidu
Two Hoysala capitals, wrapped in stone sculpture
A Belur Halebidu tour links two Hoysala capitals 16 km apart in Hassan district, with the Chennakeshava and Hoysaleswara temples, both UNESCO listed.
Overview
Sixteen kilometres separate the two Hoysala capitals of Belur and Halebidu in Hassan district, Karnataka, and their temples are among the most densely carved buildings in the state. UNESCO listed both in 2023 within the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas, a group that also takes in Somanathapura. A Belur Halebidu tour fits into one or two days from Hassan, and October to March brings the drier weather that suits walking the open temple platforms.
At Belur, the Chennakeshava Temple beside the Yagachi river was consecrated in 1117 under King Vishnuvardhana. Worship has continued there ever since, so you share the courtyard with priests and devotees. The star-shaped shrine rises from a raised platform, and its outer walls carry bands of friezes along with sculpted maidens known as madanikas. Inside, pillars reward a slow look; the Narasimha pillar holds miniature carvings, including a very small bull.
Halebidu, once called Dwarasamudra, took over as the Hoysala capital. Its Hoysaleswara Temple was begun around 1121 and finished by 1160 as a twin-shrine building for two Shiva lingas, each facing its own Nandi pavilion outside. Roughly 340 large reliefs cover the walls, joined by smaller friezes that retell the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana. The towers that once crowned the shrines are gone. The site is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, with a museum close to the temple. The Kedareshwara Temple and three Jain basadis, dedicated to Parshvanatha, Shantinatha and Adinatha, fill out the rest of a morning.
Both main temples are built of chloritic schist, a stone that cuts easily when freshly quarried, and the carvers left their names on some of the work. Allow around two hours at Belur and a similar spell at Halebidu, with a drive of about 16 km between them.
Hassan, roughly 30 to 40 km south-east of the temples, is the base town and has the main railway station. For flights, Mangaluru is about 150 to 160 km away, while Bengaluru is about 215 to 225 km by road, a drive that usually takes about 3.5 hours on NH75.

Walk the full circuit of the star-shaped platform at Belur and look at the pillars inside, not only the outer wall friezes
Pair the Hoysaleswara Temple with the nearby museum and the Jain basadis so the Halebidu visit fills a full morning
