Overview

Kalaburagi, long spelled Gulbarga, was where the Bahmani sultans first set up their court in 1347, and it is also a city of Sufi devotion. It is the headquarters of Kalaburagi district in the north-east of Karnataka, on the Deccan plateau at about 450 m. November to February brings cooler weather, while summer highs can reach the mid-40s C.

Start with the fort, which Ala-ud-Din Bahman Shah enlarged from an earlier Hindu-built stronghold. Its double wall runs about 3 km, with a moat around 30 feet wide, and the interior is mostly ruined. The Jama Masjid within it dates from 1367 and has an unusual plan, about 66 by 54 m with no open courtyard, so the whole prayer space is roofed by five large domes and dozens of smaller ones. Aurangzeb's army took the fort in 1687.

The Haft Gumbaz is a cluster of seven tombs, four of them for Bahmani sultans. Firuz Shah's is the largest and the most important, and the Archaeological Survey of India looks after the group. The city's Bahmani monuments belong to the Monuments and Forts of the Deccan Sultanate, a group India placed on its UNESCO tentative list in 2014, along with Bidar, Vijayapura and Hyderabad.

The city's living heart is the dargah of Khwaja Bande Nawaz Gesu Daraz, a Chishti saint who came south after Delhi was threatened by Timur in 1398 and died in 1422. He wrote in Dakhni as well as in Persian and Arabic, and the shrine draws people of several faiths, especially at the annual commemoration held on 15 to 17 Dhu al-Qadah. Karnataka Tourism also mentions Sufi music at the dargah. A different tradition is on show at the Sharana Basaveshwara Temple, which houses the samadhi of the 12th-century Lingayat saint and was built in 1887 and 1888, and at the Buddha Vihar.

Food is part of the visit too: jolada roti and bele hoorana holige are local specialities, and the district is known for toor dal.

Kalaburagi Junction is on two rail lines and Kalaburagi Airport (about 12 km east of the centre) opened in 2019. Hyderabad's international airport is about 140 km away, and Vijayapura lies roughly 163 km to the west. One full day covers the fort, tombs and dargah, and two days let you add the temple.
