Kodaikanal
A star-shaped lake high in the Palani Hills
A Kodaikanal tour circles a star-shaped lake at about 2,133 m, with Coaker's Walk, Pillar Rocks, Bryant Park and a May flower show in Dindigul district.
Overview
Kodaikanal is a hill station in Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu, standing at about 2,133 metres in the Palani Hills. Expect cool air, easy walks and views over forested valleys here, and the state tourism board names April to June as the best months for a Kodaikanal tour.
Everything in town revolves around Kodai Lake, a star-shaped reservoir made in 1863 by damming streams, with a shoreline of about 5 km that visitors walk, cycle or row around. Bryant Park lies on its eastern side. A forest officer, H. D. Bryant, began it in 1908, and the state horticulture department now runs it, with a glasshouse and a large rose collection. Coaker's Walk, a paved path of about 1 km laid out in 1872, follows the edge of the hill and looks down on the plains.
Further out, the sights are rock, water and forest. Pillar Rocks, a pair of sheer rock faces reported at around 122 m, stand about 7 km from the lake. Silver Cascade, Vattakanal and Pambar are the best-known falls. Berijam Lake lies in forest and can be visited only with a permit from the forest department. The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, run by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, has recorded the sun since 1901, and the Evershed effect in sunspots was first detected there in January 1909. It also keeps an astronomy museum for visitors, so ask locally about access before you go.
Flowers give the town its calendar. Each May the horticulture department holds a flower show at Bryant Park, and its 63rd edition ran from 20 to 31 May 2026. The hills also hold neelakurinji, a shrub that blooms once in about 12 years; the last flowering was in 2018, so the next is expected around 2030. A Murugan shrine in town, the Kurinji Andavar temple, preserves the plant.
Planning is mostly about the ghat road. Madurai Airport is about 115 km away, Coimbatore about 170 km, and the nearest stations are Palani at about 64 km and Kodai Road at about 80 km. Madurai's temples and Palani's Murugan shrine both fit into a longer route. Monthly averages stay between roughly 8 C and 20 C through the year, with about 1,650 mm of rain, so pack a jacket even when you visit in the warm months.
