Overview

A Madurai tour begins at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, because the whole city is laid out around it. Streets run outward from the shrine in concentric squares, and some carry the names of Tamil months and the festivals tied to them, among them Chithirai and Avani Moola. The temple compound covers about 14 acres and has 14 gopurams, the tallest being the southern one at roughly 52 metres. Inside are the Thousand-Pillared Hall, which actually holds 985 carved pillars, and the Golden Lotus tank. Evening worship includes a ceremony in which the deities are taken to a night chamber.

Other sights sit within a few kilometres. The Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, finished in the 1630s under the Nayak ruler Tirumala, lies about 2 km south-east of the temple. What survives is a large courtyard ringed by massive round pillars, and an evening light-and-sound show retells the Silappathikaram epic in Tamil and English. The Gandhi Memorial Museum occupies the old palace of Rani Mangammal and holds a bloodstained piece of cloth Gandhi was wearing when he was shot. The Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam, a temple tank with granite steps on all four sides, lies about 2 km from the main temple.

Day trips fan out in every direction. Thiruparankundram, about 8 km away, has a rock-cut Murugan temple that counts as the first of his six sacred abodes. Alagar Koyil, 21 km to the north-east, centres on a Vishnu shrine listed among the 108 Divya Desams. At Keezhadi, roughly 12 to 15 km south-east in Sivaganga district, excavators found brick buildings, drains and pottery scratched with Tamil-Brahmi letters, dated to at least the 6th century BCE. A museum there opened in March 2023 in Chettinad style.

Madurai was a Pandya capital, and its recorded history runs past 2,500 years along the Vaigai river. Locals call it Thoonga Nagaram, the city that never sleeps, a nod to its busy nights. Try jigarthanda, a cold milky drink, and look for Madurai Malli jasmine at the flower market. December to February is the most comfortable season, since March to July is the hottest stretch and October and November bring the most rain. The city also works as a gateway to Kodaikanal and Rameswaram.
