Overview

Ponmudi is a hill station in Thiruvananthapuram district, in the southern Western Ghats, about 61 km by road from the capital and at roughly 945 m above sea level. Families escaping the coastal heat, walkers and birdwatchers make up most of its visitors, and November to February is the dry, pleasant stretch for a Ponmudi tour.

The last 18 km, beginning at Anapara, wind through 22 hairpin bends past tea gardens, with the Kallar River running alongside the road for part of the way. Mornings are often misty, and typical temperatures sit between 14 and 25 C, falling to 10 to 19 C on winter nights.

Short outings come first. Golden Valley and Echo Point are viewpoints, and the Kallar area has panoramas over valleys and waterfalls. Meenmutty Falls lies close by. Each season has its own draw here: spring blooms, monsoon waterfalls and winter mist, with orchids and butterflies among the mountain life, and a tree-house tower for views. For longer walks, the trek to Seethatheertham covers 4 km to a temple complex with natural pools, and the Manachala trail covers 6 km. Elephants and gaur are sometimes spotted along these forest tracks.

Serious walkers look to Varayadumotta, an 18 km one-way route to a peak of 1,100 m that is listed for November to May and described as one of the toughest treks around Thiruvananthapuram. Some areas need Forest Department permission, so arrange access ahead rather than setting off alone.

Next to the hills is the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, which covers 53 sq km and shelters deer, leopards and many birds. Elephants, gaur, monkeys and the endangered Nilgiri tahr are named among the wildlife of the wider area. Accommodation runs from guesthouses to resorts, which suits a weekend away from the city.

For arrival, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is about 67 km away and Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station about 61 km. The final climb is slow, so leave extra time if you must reach your stay before dark.
