Overview

Rameswaram is a pilgrimage town on Pamban Island in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu. It suits devotees, readers of the Ramayana tradition and anyone curious about a place where the road and the rail line simply run out into the sea. The best stretch runs from October to March, when temperatures are at their most comfortable.

Everything here revolves around the Ramanathaswamy Temple, where Shiva takes the form of a lingam. Local belief holds that Rama prayed here to be cleansed of the sins of his war against Ravana. The shrine is counted among the twelve Jyotirlinga temples and the Char Dham sites, and its outer corridor is described as the longest of any Hindu temple in India, lined with roughly 1,212 pillars. Twenty-two sacred wells lie inside the compound, and the tradition lists 64 holy waters around the island in all. Bathing in them is central to the visit, and the first of these waters, Agni Theertham, is simply the sea beside the temple.

Outside the town there are two more places to see. Gandamadana Parvatham, a hillock about 3 km north of the temple and the island's highest point, holds a two-storey hall where a footprint attributed to Rama is venerated. Dhanushkodi lies near the south-eastern tip of the island, roughly 18 km from town. A cyclone that struck on the night of 22 to 23 December 1964 destroyed it, and it has stayed uninhabited since. Among the ruins the Kothandaramaswamy Temple still stands, and a road of about 4.5 km continues to Arichal Munai, the land's end viewpoint.

The island depends on its bridges. The old Pamban rail bridge opened on 24 February 1914 as India's first sea bridge and stopped carrying trains in December 2022. Its replacement, a rail bridge of about 2.08 km with a 72.5 m vertical lift span for ships, was inaugurated on 6 April 2025, and a separate road bridge has stood beside them since 1988. Rameswaram station is the end of the line, with trains running to Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore.

From Madurai, the faster road route via NH87 covers about 176 km in around three hours, while the other route is nearer 220 km. Two days work well: one for the temple and its wells, another for Gandamadana Parvatham and Dhanushkodi. Keep the monsoon in mind, since the north-east monsoon runs from October to January.
