Thiruvananthapuram
A seven-hill capital with a temple at its centre
A Thiruvananthapuram tour in Kerala's capital pairs the Padmanabhaswamy Temple and the 1880 Napier Museum with Kovalam, Veli and Shanghumukham beaches.
Overview
Thiruvananthapuram is the capital of Kerala and the headquarters of the district that shares its name, close to the southern tip of the Indian peninsula. A Thiruvananthapuram tour suits travellers who want temple architecture, museums and a choice of beaches within one short radius, and the dry weeks from December to February are the easiest time to cover it on foot and by road.
The city is named after the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, whose seven-tier gopuram stands about 30 m high and whose foundation is dated to 1566. In January 1750 the Maharaja of Travancore dedicated his kingdom to the deity and ruled as its servant, and the temple remains the focus of the East Fort area. Kuthira Malika Palace, built by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Balarama Varma, is nearby and displays paintings, sculptures and musical instruments.
For museums, the Napier Museum is the one to plan around. It opened in 1880 in an Indo-Saracenic building with a gabled roof and minarets, and its cases hold bronzes, ivory carvings, a temple chariot and Javanese shadow puppets. The Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, founded in 1857 across 55 acres, is among the oldest in India, and the Sree Chitra Art Gallery was founded in 1935.
The coast starts at Shanghumukham, a beach near the airport where the temple's deity is taken for a ritual sea bath at the close of the spring festival. Kovalam lies about 12.6 km south-east of the centre and is split by rock outcrops into Lighthouse, Hawah and Samudra beaches, with the 36 m Vizhinjam lighthouse above the southern one. Veli Tourist Village joins backwater and sea, Varkala has its cliff-top beach, and Poovar can be reached only by boat.
Away from the shore, the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary covers 128 sq km about 30 km from the city, and Peppara covers 53 sq km about 50 km to the north-east. Both are within a day trip, though forest entry rules should be checked first.
Weather stays steady, with highs near 31 to 32 C and lows near 23 to 24 C. The south-west monsoon arrives in early June, annual rainfall is about 1,835 mm, and the north-east monsoon brings showers in October. The central railway station at Thampanoor faces the main bus stand, so most road and rail arrivals end close to the old city.
