Overview

At the centre of Thrissur, a city in Thrissur district, Kerala, stands the Vadakkunnathan Temple, set on a wooded hillock called Thekkinkadu Maidan and ringed by a road known as the Swaraj Round, roughly 2 km around. Everything else here is organised around that circle. Temple architecture, museums and performing arts are the reasons to come, and October to February gives the most comfortable weather for walking it.

The Vadakkunnathan Temple is dedicated to Shiva and is built in the Kerala style, with four gopurams facing the cardinal directions and a Koothambalam, a hall for temple theatre. Wall paintings inside are said to be more than 350 years old, and a conservation project on the complex received a UNESCO Asia-Pacific award in 2015. Tradition ties the temple's origin to Parashurama. The surrounding ground is the stage for the Thrissur Pooram, which is held in the month of Medam, in April or May, and lasts about 36 hours.

Close to the temple, Shakthan Thampuran Palace was reworked during the reign of the Kochi ruler Rama Varma Shakthan Thampuran, from 1790 to 1805, and mixes Dutch features with a Kerala courtyard plan. Today it holds the Archaeological Museum, whose bronze, sculpture and epigraphy galleries sit beside a heritage garden and the ruler's tomb. The same king is credited with starting the Pooram more than 200 years ago.

Elsewhere in the city, the Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours, known locally as Puthen Pally, was begun in 1929 in an Early Gothic style. Its Bible Tower, finished in 2004, stands about 260 feet tall. The city's zoo, about 2 km from the centre, dates from 1885 and shares its grounds with a natural history museum and an art museum.

Thrissur earns its title of cultural capital through institutions as much as monuments. The Kerala Sahitya Akademi, the Lalithakala Akademi and Kerala Kalamandalam are all linked with the city, and the Sangeetha Nataka Akademi runs a theatre festival here.

Thrissur railway station is only about 1 km from the temple, and the Nedumbassery airport is roughly 46 to 53 km away. Temperatures run from about 14 C to 33 C in October and November, but May can reach 42 C and the rain is heavy from June to September.
