Munnar in December and January is cold, misty and busy. The hill station sits above 1,500 metres in Idukki district, and these two months bring its coldest nights and some of its clearest mornings over the tea slopes. This guide covers the weather to expect, what is open, how far ahead to book and how to spend two or three days.
What is the weather like in Munnar in December and January?
December and January are the coldest months in Munnar. Night lows are reported at around 12 to 14 degrees Celsius, and mornings are often misty, with the sun warming the slopes by midday. The heaviest rain falls from June to August, so winter days are mostly dry. Carry a warm layer for the evenings and expect the cold to feel sharper at open viewpoints and in the early hours.
What is open in the cold season?
The tea estates, the tea museum, the Mattupetty reservoir and the Top Station viewpoint make up the usual round, and all of them suit cool, clear weather. Eravikulam National Park, the home of the Nilgiri tahr, normally closes for about two months in February and March so the animals can calve, which means December and January fall before the closure. Opening hours and fees were not published in the sources we checked, so confirm them before you plan a day around the park.
Look at the status of Eravikulam National Park and the condition of the hill road a few days before you travel. Park hours, fees and closures are set by the Kerala forest authorities and can change.
How far ahead should you book?
Hill stays are in demand over the winter holiday weeks, so book your room as soon as your dates are fixed and treat the days around Christmas and New Year as the busiest. If your dates are flexible, a mid-week stay is likely to feel calmer than a weekend. Plan one fixed activity a day and keep the rest open, because the drives between viewpoints take longer than the map suggests.
How should you plan two or three days?
| Stop | Why go | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Tea estates and the tea museum | See the estates up close and learn how the industry began in the 1880s | Morning or late afternoon |
| Mattupetty reservoir | Pedal boats on a hill reservoir | Midday, when the air has warmed |
| Top Station | A high viewpoint over the ridges | Early, while the air is clear |
| Eravikulam National Park | Open grassland and the Nilgiri tahr | A full morning, once opening is confirmed |
