Hampi in the Cool Season: How to Plan Two Days Among the Ruins from November to February

Duration2 days
Best monthsOctober to February
PaceEarly starts, lots of walking
BaseHampi or Hosapete, 13 km

Hampi rewards an early start. From November to February the days are cool and dry enough to walk among the ruins, and two days are enough to see the sacred centre, the Vittala complex, the royal enclosure and one of the hills. The plan below puts the long walks at the cooler ends of the day and the ticketed sites in the middle.

Why does Hampi deserve two days?

Hampi was the last capital of the Vijayanagara Empire and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. More than 1,600 monuments survive across a protected area of about 4,187 hectares, spread over boulder hills and a bend of the Tungabhadra River. Karnataka Tourism gives the best months as October to February, with temperatures between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius.

What does a two-day plan look like?

Day 1

The sacred centre and the Vittala complex

Morning
Virupaksha Temple and Hampi Bazaar
A working temple with a gateway that rises close to 50 metres. Remove your shoes, dress modestly and walk the old bazaar street.
Midday
Lunch and a rest in the village
Keep the hottest hours for shade.
Afternoon
Vittala Temple and the Stone Chariot
The chariot is a granite shrine to Garuda, and the hall is known for its carved pillars. Karnataka Tourism lists the ticket at about 40 rupees for Indian visitors and 600 rupees for foreign visitors; confirm at the counter.
Evening
Hemakuta Hill
Small early shrines and a wide view over the ruins at sunset.
Day 2

The royal centre and the river

Early morning
Matanga Hill
Hampi's highest point and the usual choice for sunrise. Carry a torch for the climb in the dark.
Morning
Lotus Mahal and the Elephant Stables
Hindu and Indo-Islamic styles side by side, and a long building with eleven domed chambers for the royal elephants.
Midday
Hazara Rama Temple
Wall friezes show festival processions.
Afternoon
The Tungabhadra and Anegundi
Cross the river to Anegundi, a village older than Hampi. The crossing was historically made by coracle.

Tip

Start early and rest in the hot afternoon, even in winter. Most sites are open air and shade is limited.

How should you move around the ruins?

The sites are spread over several kilometres, so decide before each half-day which cluster you will cover and keep the walking within it. The sacred centre around Hampi Bazaar is the easiest to cover on foot. The royal enclosure and the river sit further apart, so allow more time for the gaps between them than the map suggests.

What should you know about temple etiquette?

Virupaksha Temple is still a place of worship, so dress modestly and remove your shoes before you enter. Keep voices low near the sanctum and ask before photographing people.

What should you carry?

Checklist block
Sturdy closed shoes for uneven granite
A hat, sunscreen and plenty of water
Small change for entry tickets
A torch or phone light for the sunrise climb

How do you get to Hampi?

Hosapete Junction, about 13 km away, is the nearest railhead and bus hub, and you can stay there or in Hampi itself. Jindal Vijaynagar Airport is about 40 km away, and Bengaluru is about 340 km by road, a drive of roughly six to seven hours.

FAQ block

Can you see Hampi in one day?

One day covers little more than the sacred centre and the Vittala complex. Two days let the royal enclosure and a hill fit in without hurrying.

Are the temples free to enter?

Most are free. Karnataka Tourism names the Vittala Temple as the main ticketed stop, so carry small change for tickets.

When is the best time to visit Hampi?

October to February is the cooler season, and temperatures run between about 15 and 30 degrees Celsius.
