Overview

The Rayalaseema heritage tour is a five-day private drive through Andhra Pradesh: the painted Veerabhadra temple at Lepakshi, the Gandikota fort above the Penna gorge, the fort city of Kurnool and the Srisailam Jyotirlinga temple. It runs from Bengaluru airport to Hyderabad airport and suits travellers who accept long drives. October to February is the cooler season.

Who it suits

Temple and fort enthusiasts who are happy with long road days; not ideal for those who want short drives or a slow pace

Good to know

Drive days

Three of the five days include a drive of about 4 hours or more, so the sightseeing is shorter than on a loop of short hops

Hot months

Kurnool can pass 43 C in May, so October to February is the easier window

Srisailam road

The approach to Srisailam crosses forest; plan to arrive in daylight and check local rules before leaving

Departure day

The drive from Srisailam to Hyderabad airport takes about 4.5 hours, so an afternoon or evening flight suits best
