A Wayanad forest retreat is a four-day private tour of Wayanad in Kerala, with three nights at a single base on the cool plateau. Edakkal on Mondays

The district tourism council lists Edakkal Caves as closed on Mondays, so the two sightseeing days can be swapped

Forest safari

The forest department controls safari access, so a drive in the sanctuary is confirmed locally on the day

Closed shoes with a good grip help on the uphill path at Edakkal and the walk to Soochipara

Rain

June to September is the monsoon, when heavy rain can change plans on the hill roads

Kozhikode airport to Wayanad, with Pookode Lake if time allows

Edakkal Caves and a Muthanga forest safari

  • Drive east past Sulthan Bathery to the Edakkal Caves, about 10 km beyond the town
  • Climb the hillside path to see the carved walls of the rock shelter
  • Continue to the Muthanga range of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, about 14 km from Sulthan Bathery
  • Take a forest-department safari if one is available
  • Return to the hotel
